MSU Employee Awarded $390,000 Settlement

Montana State University (MSU) has agreed to a $390,000 settlement in November 2022 after an employee driving a campus-owned vehicle collided with another vehicle near Four Corners in early 2021.
The settlement was made public on the state’s transparency website.
According to a civil complaint filed in Gallatin County District Court, on February 9th, 2021, the employee, David Gettel, attempted to turn left on State Highway 85 from Ramshorn Drive. He collided with a vehicle driven by Josh Kilwein.
Kilwein filed a lawsuit against the state in November 2021 and claimed that the collision severely injured his neck, back, and leg.
“This was a motor vehicle accident involving an MSU employee,” a spokesperson for MSU, Michael Becker said. “The university accepted responsibility for the employee’s actions and we feel this is a fair settlement to resolve the case.”
Michael Becker said that he is unaware if David Gettel is still an employee at MSU.
